The Newest Addition to the Hands On Hartford Team

July 14th, 2010

Hands On Hartford has hired Alice Turner Thompson, an experienced educator, entrepreneur and workforce development expert, and skilled contributor to Greater Hartford's non-profit sector, as the director of its Huntington School Services Initiative.

In this role, Alice will manage all facets of the Huntington School Services Initiative, a program that currently offers tutoring services for students at Sanchez and Betances elementary schools in Hartford. In addition to managing a staff of over 40 Connecticut certified teachers, Alice will play a pivotal role in the program's expansion in Hartford and its surrounding communities.

"We are thrilled to have Alice on board, as she will be a key player in our efforts to deliver high-quality tutoring services to an even larger population of students," said Doug Sudell, chief executive officer, Hands On Hartford. "Alice's non-profit experience, combined with her organizational management and training skills and corporate background, make her a wonderful fit for this position."

A resident of Manchester, Alice was previously the president of Turner Training USA, LLC, an independent organizational training and development company. She also held director-level positions with CIGNA Corporation and Travelers Companies. Most recently, Alice graduated from Encore!Hartford, an intensive leadership training program through University of Connecticut's Nonprofit Leadership Program. As an Encore fellow, she served as a performance consultant for Achieve Hartford!, an independent nonprofit that focuses on student achievement and supporting effective and sustained school reform in the Hartford Public Schools.

About the Hands On Hartford Huntington Learning Center Initiative:
Last fall, Hands On Hartford entered into a five-year agreement with Huntington Learning Centers, Inc., a national provider of supplemental education services, to provide tutoring services for students at Sanchez and Betances elementary schools in Hartford.

Under this agreement, students who qualified under the federal No Child Left Behind Act received free tutoring during the school year. From September 2009 to June 2010, the program served 79 students and resulted in one new full-time position and 15 part-time positions.
