A Summer of Volunteer Opportunities
June 4th, 2010
Summer is a season of endless volunteer opportunities! If you are looking for ways to get involved in your community this summer, you've come to the right place. Hands On Hartford's programs run all year long, and there are many ways you can make a difference by volunteering your time to help others.
This year Hands On Hartford is working in partnership with the Hartford Public Libraries to provide a healthy lunch to students during the week. Without a free school lunch to rely on, many students and their families feel more pressure than ever to find affordable and nutritious meals to get them by. Hartford Public Library's 10 locations will be offering lunches Monday through Friday from June 21st to August 27th.
For the program, volunteers are needed to assist with accepting delivery of meals at the library's branches, serving the meals, and cleaning up after the meal. This is a great opportunity for anyone with some free time on weekday mornings to help provide children with a healthy, free meal. Volunteers who can dedicate one day a week for the length of the program are especially needed. This opportunity is available only for volunteers ages 14 and up.
Also this summer there are two opportunities to serve a holiday meal at our Community Meals soup kitchen - Independence Day (July 4th) and Labor Day (September 6th) as well as daily lunches and dinner three days a week. Holiday meals are a fun way to share your time with those in need by helping serve a meal in a festive atmosphere. They are very popular events so sign up today!
As always there are opportunities to cook and serve brunch on the weekends at Peter's Retreat, and also cleaning and landscaping projects through the summer. Maintaining such a large and historic home is difficult for our small staff so we welcome skilled volunteers with an interest in giving back to the community.
Donations of personal care items such as deodorant, shampoo and soap are needed, as well as socks and t-shirts. If you are interested in organizing a donation drive contact us today for more information on how you can help!
Check our Project Calendar and Facebook page for frequent updates about other volunteer opportunities throughout the year.
