Free Parenting and Family Resource Fair Saturday
June 12th, 2010
Public Allies Hartford and the Hartford Office for Young Children will hold a free Parenting and Family Resource Fair on the green at the Billings Forge Community, 563 Broad Street, on Saturday June 12th from 12 noon to 4 p.m. Parents from the Hartford area will have the opportunity to interact with representatives from local service organizations to discuss educational opportunities for their children and them ranging from parenting education classes to early childcare and education programs to college readiness programs.
There will be more than 20 community-based organizations in attendance, including Salvation Army, Co-opportunity, and the Hispanic Health Council. For children, there will be a range of fun activities including face-painting, a magician, vegetable-planting, arts and crafts, and more. There also will be free food, free take-aways, and a raffle for all attendees.
“Resources and services that support parents and enhance their ability to focus on the present and future well being of their children are essential,” says José Colón-Rivas, Executive Director of the Hartford Office for Young Children. “Parents have a wide variety of support services available to them in locations throughout the city, and this event will provide a great opportunity to connect to these services.”
Public Allies Hartford, the group organizing the event, is a team of 10 young professionals participating in a 10 month Americorps program. The Public Allies CT program includes a full-time apprenticeship at a local nonprofit organization, weekly leadership development trainings, and a Team Service Project designed to serve the Hartford community. The Living Landscape Parent Resource Fair is Public Allies Hartford’s Team Service Project.
